As it turned out, he got the huge amount of hardware after the company allowed him to take away a decommissioned working server. Such "generosity" of the employer is not surprising, because it allowed the company to save on the disposal of outdated equipment, writes Tom's Hardware.
In the photos, you can count 30 DDR4-2666 sticks, and the three individually shown modules have a capacity of 64 GB each. If all the sticks are the same, the total amount of RAM in the find is an impressive 1,920 GB.
Will such memory be needed in a regular PC?
In the comments under the post, users immediately began jokingly asking for a few bars as a gift, but the reality turned out to be more complicated. A detailed inspection of the markings shows that these are Samsung 64GB DDR4 ECC Registered (RDIMM) modules.
This type of RAM is designed exclusively for servers and workstations based on Intel Xeon, AMD Epyc, or AMD Threadripper platforms. Even if your motherboard supports the DDR4 standard, these ECC RDIMMs will be physically and electrically incompatible with regular home or gaming computers.
The real value of the find
Analysis of ads on eBay showed that one 64GB DDR4-2666 module costs from $350 to $425. If we calculate at an average price of $400 per piece, then 30 strips are estimated at approximately $12,000, which is fully consistent with the author's statement.
However, if VastOption8705 lives in Australia (as indirect signs indicate) and gave the amount in Australian dollars, then AU$10,000 is equal to approximately US$7,200. In any case, to realize this potential, the find will have to find a new owner with compatible server equipment.
