In September and October, Russian attacks damaged several large data centers, including Cosmonova, Parkovy, and Omega Telecom. This caused Megogo and Sweet.tv users to experience disruptions in their TV channels.
The Youtv service suffered particularly serious losses. According to its head, Maksym Smilyants, the company lost about 60% of its equipment worth $1 million. The platform was down for 24 hours, and some channels and video libraries remained unavailable for two weeks.
According to Andriy Solomakh, a member of the board of the Internet Association of Ukraine, the effects of the attacks were felt by almost the entire online television market. To avoid new failures, companies have to buy additional servers and place them in different cities or abroad. All this costs money, so subscriptions may become more expensive.
However, according to Solomakha, it will not be possible to cover all these costs by increasing subscription prices. Therefore, online services will have to negotiate with TV channels to pay less for the right to show them. If TV channels do not agree, the services can simply remove some of them from their packages. In this case, viewers will have access to fewer channels even at a higher price.
