According to the application’s press service, the option is available to premium account holders.
«If you often receive messages on Telegram, you can make sending messages to users who are not in your contact list a paid service,» the company said in a statement.
How to do it? Messages must be paid for with the messenger’s internal currency — «stars», which must be purchased. You can also set up paid incoming messages in groups, in particular for comments in channels.
«For group owners, this is another way to monetize their communities and earn stars, while supporting more meaningful communication between members,» Telegram says. The settings allow for exceptions to these rules.
Stars earned for incoming messages can be used to pay for a premium subscription in Telegram. They can also be withdrawn using the Fragment platform, receiving rewards in return. These, in turn, can be used to purchase advertising in Telegram, collectible gifts on the TON blockchain, and other purposes.
In addition, now in a chat with a user not from your contact list, basic information about them will be displayed when you start a conversation. For example, the country identified by the phone number, common groups, if any; the date of registration in Telegram and the approximate time when the username or profile photo was last updated.
The new option also has a security function — the paid messaging service, according to the developers, will help users recognize scammers or, conversely, make sure of the reliability of the interlocutor even before the account owner enters into a dialogue.
Recall that paid messages on Telegram were tested back in February.
