On Ukraine's Independence Day, the European Commission approved the allocation of €6.1 billion for new defense procurement for the needs of our country. The funding will be used to purchase air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radar stations.

As noted in the official press release of the European Commission, this decision is a response to the escalation of Russian attacks using ballistic missiles and drones. According to the data provided, 376 missile strikes were recorded in July alone, making strengthening Ukrainian defenses critically urgent.

"On Ukraine's Independence Day, Europe is demonstrating that our support is unwavering and concrete. As Russia steps up its attacks, we are stepping up to help Ukraine protect its people and its skies. Europe stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine, and we will provide what is needed, when it is needed," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The vast majority of purchases will be made from European defense companies. The European Commission emphasizes the need to significantly increase supplies by destocking, reprioritizing orders, and ramping up production.

To receive the funds, Ukraine must submit signed contracts with defense companies to the European Commission. After their verification, the funding will be released. The approved 6.1 billion euros is part of a larger Ukraine Support Loan (UASL) program, which provides a total of 90 billion euros of support for 2026-2027 (of which 60 billion is for defense).
