Ukraine is beginning the practical phase of implementing fifth-generation mobile communications. As Deputy Prime Minister for Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov reported, the first pilot zones for launching the latest technology will be Lviv and the village of Borodyanka in the Kyiv region.
According to the government official, at the initial stage, the coverage will not be continuous, but will be local areas where equipment compatibility and network operation will be tested in real conditions.
As explained by the head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration, Mykola Kalashnyk, Borodyanka was chosen as an experimental site to test technical solutions before scaling the technology to other communities in the region. This will allow specialists to evaluate the operation of 5G in the specific conditions of infrastructure restoration before deploying the network throughout the country.
Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation Stanislav Prybytko clarified in an interview with Channel 24 that the pilot list of cities, in addition to Lviv and Borodyanka, will also include Kharkiv. The successful implementation of this stage will pave the way for further implementation of the technology in the largest megacities of the country - Kyiv and Odessa.
In parallel, the state continues to work on ensuring basic access to the network, implementing projects to connect educational institutions and hospitals to high-speed optical Internet.
It was previously reported that the final shutdown of 3G in Ukraine and the transition to 5G is scheduled for December 31, 2030 .
First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov believes that the inclusion of cities such as Kharkiv and Borodyanka in 5G testing will also be a symbolic step and will show that Ukraine is developing technologically, despite a full-scale war.
