Threads is becoming more popular than X, but still in mobile app format

A new report from web analytics platform Similarweb has shown that Threads is confidently ahead of its main competitor Elon Musk's X in terms of daily active users on iOS and Android.
Last year, Threads briefly surpassed X in terms of daily active mobile app users, according to a report by Similarweb. The two platforms then traded roughly the same number of times in this metric, until Threads took the lead again in October, Gizmodo reports .
Now, Similarweb’s latest report shows Threads’ lead in daily active users on iOS and Android is even stronger. As of two weeks ago, Threads had an audience of 141.5 million daily active users, compared to just 125 million for X’s Android and iOS apps.
At the same time, X is still a much more popular platform for web users. As of September last year, according to Forbes, X.com had 140.7 million daily active users, while Threads had just 7.7 million.

Recall that Meta launched Threads — an analogue of Twitter — in July 2023. This social network is a “daughter” of Instagram, their traffic is distilled to both platforms. Threads and Instagram, in turn, are managed by Facebook. Only in December 2024 did Meta show the number of daily active users of its new platform, whichreached 100 million.
And although Threads is ahead of X and shows a steady growth trend, it is also worth mentioning that this shift is taking place against the backdrop of a rather dirty scandal surrounding Musk's social network due to pornographic deepfakes of real people, including minors.
