In September, users registered about 44,000 new .si addresses. For comparison, in August there were less than 2,000. The pace of registrations was especially frantic at the end of the month. On September 30 alone, about 11,000 new domains appeared. Register.si called such a surge unprecedented for the last year.
The reason for the excitement may be the new abbreviation SI, as it coincides with the national domain of Slovenia. However, the Slovenian registry is cautious about a direct connection and does not claim that all the demand was caused by Trump. Another possible explanation is that people are buying up such addresses en masse in the hope that after the popularization of the abbreviation SI, such domains can be resold at a higher price.
