Trump ignored the call of Amodei, Altman and Musk. In his opinion, the risk of losing the AI race to China is more real than the risks to human security from AI
US President Donald Trump has rejected calls from AI company executives to slow down the development of artificial intelligence.
US President Donald Trump has rejected calls from AI company executives to slow down the development of artificial intelligence.
As you know, technology company executives, including Dario Amodei of Anthropic, Sam Altman of OpenAI, and Elon Musk of SpaceX, yesterday called on the country’s authorities to tighten regulation of the industry due to growing fears that AI poses an existential threat to humanity.
However, Trump said on Sunday that the most important priority for the United States is to maintain its international leadership in this sector, although he allowed the introduction of certain "safeguards."
“We are leading the fight against China in the field of artificial intelligence… and, frankly, I want to see that continue, because whoever wins in the field of artificial intelligence wins in general,” Trump is quoted as saying to reporters by the Financial Times.
In his opinion, AI security issues are being raised by “many negative forces,” and their negative predictions will not come true.
Recall that the security concerns associated with the rapid pace of development of artificial intelligence came into the spotlight last week, when former OpenAI and Anthropic employee Jacob Coxon warned that "the people who are creating artificial intelligence sincerely believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade."
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said Saturday that the industry “must slow down the pace of improving the capabilities of AI models,” and called for monitoring leading companies by third-party evaluators, setting industry safety standards and global coordination of regulations. Altman and Musk expressed support for the proposals.
However, the Trump administration and Republicans have said that AI companies can take such measures themselves, and that more radical steps are unnecessary and would give China a competitive advantage.
Former head of the US President’s artificial intelligence department, David Sachs, said Saturday night that AI companies should "stop pretending they need someone’s permission."
“Go ahead, put a limit on everything. You set it! The easiest way not to create a superintelligence is to agree not to create one. Demanding the regulatory framework you want as the price for it feels like blackmailing the public and the political system,” Sachs wrote on X.
Meanwhile, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson urged people not to "panic," echoing Trump’s concerns about China and calling for a meeting of tech executives and lawmakers at the White House.
At the same time, Democrats criticized the Republican response and are demanding swift action to regulate the industry.
As dev.ua wrote, OpenAI will not hold an initial public offering (IPO) in 2026. The main reason for postponing the potentially trillion-dollar IPO was concerns about the security of artificial intelligence.
Як нейромережі бачать вільну та незалежну Україну? Тест dev.ua
