Twitch allowed Amazon to train AI on users' streams. What gets into the data?
Twitch has added a new setting that allows users to prevent Amazon from using their channel content to train generative AI. This means that the permission is already enabled by default, so you have to manually opt out of training AI models.
Twitch has added a new setting that allows users to prevent Amazon from using their channel content to train generative AI. This means that the permission is already enabled by default, so you have to manually opt out of training AI models.
The new policy has sparked outrage among streamers. During a broadcast on the company’s official channel, the company’s chief product officer, Mike Minton, responded to the criticism. «Why isn’t it turned off by default? That’s what everyone is spamming in chat. I understand, ‘Let me opt in instead of making me opt out,’» he quoted user complaints. «Well, here’s the honest answer… If users had to turn it on themselves, no one would do it. That’s actually the honest answer,» he explained.
Users also weren’t told whether Amazon had used the platform’s content to train AI before. When one viewer asked if his streams could have already been used in the training data, Minton said, «I don’t really know the answer to that question because I don’t know what Amazon has done in terms of training models and what data they’ve used and what they haven’t.»
In addition, not only streams and broadcast recordings will be used for training, but also messages in chats. For example, even if a user has disabled AI model training on their channel, but writes something in the chat of another channel where this option is enabled, their comment can be used for AI training.
There’s another question that Twitch hasn’t yet answered. Streamers often show not only themselves, but also other people’s video games, music, and other content. So game developers have already asked: if Amazon takes the entire video stream for training, doesn’t it include graphics and other game materials in the dataset?
«What happens if a streamer streams your game and hasn’t turned off AI training? Does Twitch think it has the right to feed a developer’s game to its AI slop factory? This has much deeper implications than it seems at first glance,» asks user Mike Futter.

Тест dev.ua
