TypeScript becomes the most popular language on GitHub for the first time. Here's why
According to GitHub Octoverse, the TypeScript programming language (Microsoft’s JavaScript variant) has become the most popular language on GitHub, overtaking Python.
According to GitHub Octoverse, the TypeScript programming language (Microsoft’s JavaScript variant) has become the most popular language on GitHub, overtaking Python.
In August 2025, TypeScript became the most popular language on GitHub for the first time, surpassing JavaScript and Python, the report said. Its growth is attributed to the demand for development using artificial intelligence, InfoWorld reports.
The rise of TypeScript illustrates the shift to typed languages, which could make agent-based coding more robust in production. Additionally, most major front-end frameworks now use TypeScript by default, the report says. And while Python remains dominant for AI and data science workloads, the JavaScript/TypeScript ecosystem is responsible for the majority of overall development.
The rise of TypeScript was one of three key shifts noted in the report, all three of which were related to AI. It notes that the use of generative AI tools is now standard in development, with over 1.1 million public repositories now using the LLM SDK, and 693,867 of those projects were created in the last 12 months.
Developers aggregated a record 518.7 million pull requests in the 2025 period (a 29% increase year-over-year), and AI adoption accelerated: 80% of new developers on GitHub use Copilot within the first week.
The third change is how AI is reshaping developer choices, not just code. In the past, developer choices were about IDE, language, or framework, but that has changed. GitHub now sees a correlation between the rapid adoption of AI tools and the evolution of language preferences. This and other changes suggest that AI is now influencing not only the speed of code writing, but also which languages and tools developers use.
«The agents are here. The first signals in our data are starting to show their impact, but ultimately point to one key thing: we are just getting started and expect much more activity in the coming months and years,» GitHub notes.
The report lists over 4.3 million AI-related repositories and notes record levels of activity across all repositories. Developers created over 230 new repositories every minute, merged an average of 43.2 million pull requests per month (+23% year-over-year), and pushed nearly 1 billion commits in 2025 (+25.1% year-over-year), including a record of nearly 100 million commits in August alone.
It was previously reported that Microsoft is preparing a big change to GitHub: Copilot AI tools and new agents will work in the terminal, browser, VS Code, and other applications. The goal is to return GitHub to its status as the «center of gravity» for all AI development.
