This year, global Internet traffic grew by 17.2%. Mobile devices account for more than 40%. Overall, more than two-thirds of mobile traffic comes from Android devices.
Google retained its position as the most popular internet service overall. OpenAI remained at the top of the Generative AI category. Binance continues to lead the cryptocurrency category. WhatsApp remained the best messaging platform and Facebook remained the best social network.
Global Starlink traffic in 2024 increased 3.3 times. In the US alone, Starlink traffic increased more than 2.5 times, and in Brazil - 17 times. SpaceX will eventually face serious competition in space from rivals like Amazon, but for now they are the dominant player.
React, PHP, and jQuery were among the most popular technologies used to build websites, while HubSpot, Google, and WordPress were among the most popular support providers and platforms.
Go has overtaken NodeJS as the most popular language used for automated API requests. Almost 12% of automated API requests are made by Go-based clients, with smaller shares coming from NodeJS, Python, Java, and .NET. Compared to 2023, Go's share has increased by about 40%, giving it the top spot, while NodeJS's share has fallen by just over 30%. The shares of Python and Java also increased, while the share of .NET fell.
In 2024, there were 225 major internet outages worldwide, many of which were caused by government decisions to shut down internet connections at the regional and national levels. Cable breaks and power outages were also major causes.
Submarine cable breaks have caused five times more damage to traffic between Europe and Asia than researchers previously reported. Key insights from the RETN study
