An innovative complex for prosthetics and additive technologies was opened at Kyiv Polytechnic University
The Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute hosted the grand opening of an innovative complex that unites the Sikorsky Challenge Active Technologies Science Park and the Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Center of the Institute of Postgraduate Education of KPI. This unique space is aimed at the development of additive technologies, biomedical engineering, and inclusive education, in particular for veterans.
During the opening ceremony, Director of the Educational and Innovative Center for Prosthetics and Rehabilitation, Natalia Seminska, emphasized the historical significance of the place where a complex of mechanical workshops was built 125 years ago, simultaneously with the founding of KPI. According to her, this center continues the historical continuity of scientific achievements of the last century.
As part of the opening, a presentation of the complex's key projects took place:
The AM+SP Sikorsky Challenge Additive Technology Science Park is a platform for developing startups and technological solutions.
The Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Center of the Institute of Postgraduate Education of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is an innovative space for working with bionic prostheses and training specialists.
The ADDEX project "The Future of the Prosthetics System in Ukraine" is a charitable initiative aimed at the reform and development of the field of prosthetics and rehabilitation.
The complex is particularly proud of the ADDEX team, which brought together high school students, students, and teachers. It was this team that inspired the creation of the “Training for Veterans” program, which is scheduled to start on May 26. Veterans are considered not only as users of the latest solutions, but also as future team members who will join the creation of new technologies. 37 people have already signed up for the program, and the center’s team will make every effort to inspire them to further study and master new professions.
In 2023, six partners joined forces to develop the field of prosthetics and rehabilitation. It became obvious that traditional approaches could not solve global challenges in this area, and therefore a decision was made to develop and manufacture their own technologies. The first step was the creation of the Educational and Innovative Center for Prosthetics and Rehabilitation, where specialists in prosthetic rehabilitation, military psychology and other important disciplines are already being trained. The center also supports innovative developments in the field of rehabilitation engineering and occupational therapy.
In 2024, the Sikorsky Challenge Additive Technology Science Park was created, with people as its key value. The park's goal is to prove that innovation should serve people. The park's specialists are already collaborating with rehabilitation centers and hospitals, modeling, designing, printing, and scanning prosthetics.
The development of the complex was made possible thanks to the support of the state and patrons, including OLX, EPAM, OBRIO, Genesis for Ukraine, appflame, KOLO Foundation, Sikorsky Challenge, and Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
