Access to the model is scheduled to be terminated on February 16, 2026. That is, applications that still run on GPT-4o will be given about three months to switch to another version, VentureBeat writes .
OpenAI emphasized that the term only applies to the API. But the company has not announced any plans to discontinue GPT-4o in ChatGPT itself, where it is still available to individual users and all paid subscription levels.
Internally, this model is considered an outdated system with relatively low API usage compared to the newer GPT-5.1 series.
According to people familiar with OpenAI’s product strategy, the company now recommends developers move to GPT-5.1 for most new projects, using gpt-5.1-chat-latest as the primary chat endpoint. These models offer larger context windows, additional “thinking” modes for complex analysis, and higher throughput than GPT-4o.
