"Abolishing mathematics or history is absurd": the Ministry of Education opposed changes in the National Secondary Education System

"The government has submitted a bill on the conditions for admission for 2027, it corresponds to the conditions that currently exist in 2026... We categorically do not support an alternative bill that provides for slightly different conditions for mathematics," Lisovyi said, Interfax-Ukraine reports .
According to the minister, mathematics should remain mandatory, since the NMT is designed to test the basic competencies of a graduate - the ability to read, write, and count.
"Abolishing mathematics or history, removing them from mandatory subjects of secondary education is absurd, it will not lead to any positive changes for us as a country," Lisovyi emphasized.
Recall that on June 2, 2026, a draft law was registered in the Verkhovna Rada, which proposes to make mathematics an optional subject at secondary schools in 2027. However, representatives of the IT sector, scientists, the military, and the business community categorically criticized this initiative.
Mathematics test results have worsened since 2021: in which schools in Ukraine graduates have the best level of knowledge in a subject that is of key importance in IT
