Germany launches special electricity tariff for gamers with powerful PCs

German utility SWK ENERGIE from Krefeld has introduced a new specialized electricity tariff called meinGAMING. The project is aimed at owners of powerful gaming systems, streamers and families with several people playing.

The idea behind the offer is to provide better value for money for those who consume a lot of electricity: the tariff involves a relatively high fixed monthly fee, but a lower cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh). In addition, the supplier guarantees a fixed price for up to 24 months and assures that 100% of the energy comes from renewable sources, TechSpot reports .

Three levels of consumption

Depending on the activity and number of appliances in the home, the tariff developers offer three categories with calculated annual consumption:

  1. Casual Gamer (2,500 kWh/year): for those who spend 10 or more hours a week gaming to relax after work or on the weekends.

  2. Pro Gamer (3,500 kWh/year): designed for enthusiasts with high-end PCs, multiple monitors, who game 30 hours or more per week, stream, mod, or work from home.

  3. Gaming Households (5,000 kWh/year): a category for families or shared housing where two or more active gamers live with a total gaming time of 50 hours or more per week.

Why energy companies are interested in gamers

Modern top-end hardware requires significant energy consumption. For example, a PC with an Nvidia RTX 5090 graphics card and an Intel Core Ultra 9 285K processor, for example, consumes about 1,100 kWh per year, assuming 30 hours of gaming per week. Together with the monitor and peripherals, this figure exceeds 1,200 kWh/year, which makes the gaming community an attractive audience for energy companies.
