Twenty-one humanoid robots took part in the Beijing half marathon for the first time alongside thousands of people.
As Reuters reports, the participating robots from Chinese manufacturers such as DroidVP and Noetix Robotics came in a variety of shapes and sizes — some shorter than 120 cm, others up to 1.8 m.
One manufacturing company announced that it had released a robot that looked as close to a human as possible, with female facial features and the ability to wink and smile.
At the same time, some companies tested their robots for several weeks before the competition, and during the half marathon they were accompanied by human trainers.
The winner among robots was Tiangong Ultra from the Beijing Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center with a time of 2 hours and 40 minutes. Meanwhile, the winner of the men’s race showed a time of 1 hour and 2 minutes, which still leaves humans on average 2.5 times faster.
The chief technical officer of the robotics center, Tang Jian, noted that Tiangong Ultra’s performance was facilitated by its long legs and an algorithm that allows it to imitate the human way of running.
«I don’t want to brag, but I think no other robotics firm in the West can match Tiangong’s sporting achievements,» Tang added, noting that the robot changed batteries three times during the race.
Tan also promised that in the future, the developer will focus on the industrial application of humanoid robots so that they can work in factories, be used in various business scenarios, and perform household chores.
Although humanoid robots have appeared in marathons in China over the past year, this was the first time they had competed alongside humans in a race.
As dev.ua reported, Tesla CEO Elon Musk plans to release a batch of 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots this year .
