While there have long been Telegram channels dedicated to distributing photos of nude women taken without their consent, the widespread availability of artificial intelligence tools means that anyone can instantly become the subject of graphic sexual content that can be viewed by millions.
In a Russian-language Telegram channel promoting deepfakes of bloggers and celebrities, a Telegram bot for AI nudity promised "a neural network that doesn't know the word 'no'."
"Choose poses, shapes, and locations. Do everything with her that you can't do in real life," the message said.
In a Chinese-language Telegram channel with nearly 25,000 subscribers, men shared videos of their “first love” or “girl’s best friend” being forced to undress with the help of AI.
A network of Telegram channels targeting Nigerian users is spreading deepfakes along with hundreds of stolen nude photos and intimate images.
A review of data from the independent analytical service Telemetr.io, which has an index of similar channels, indicates that Telegram has blocked a certain number of channels for creating deepfake nudes.
Telegram representatives told The Guardian that deepfake pornography and the tools to create it are explicitly prohibited by the service’s terms of service, adding that “such content is routinely removed as soon as it is discovered. Moderators, armed with specialized AI tools, proactively monitor the platform’s public segments and accept complaints to remove content that violates our rules, including content that encourages the creation of deepfake pornography.”
