The administration of US President Donald Trump is in talks with Intel regarding the US government’s acquisition of a stake in the chipmaker.
This is reported by Bloomberg, citing its informed sources.
The size of the potential government stake has not been determined, and the talks began just a week after President Donald Trump called for the dismissal of Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan, accusing him of a «very conflicted position.»
At the same time, plans for state participation emerged as a result of a meeting between Trump and Tan, which, according to the publication, took place this week.
The Trump Administration itself is not yet ready to comment on this issue.
«Discussion of hypothetical deals should be viewed as speculation unless the administration formally announces it,» said White House spokesman Kush Desai.
Intel also declined to comment on the talks, saying only in a statement that it is «deeply committed to supporting President Trump’s efforts to strengthen U.S. leadership in technology.»
«We look forward to continuing our work with the Trump administration to advance these shared priorities, but we are not going to comment on rumors or speculation,» Intel said.
Recall that chip industry pioneer Intel has been experiencing financial difficulties in recent years, suffering from the loss of market share and its technological advantage over competitors.
To deal with the crisis, Intel intended to spin off its chip business into a separate company, calling it Intel’s most significant transformation in 40 years.
Last year, Intel announced it would cut 15,000 jobs, after which the company’s shares fell by 20%.
