The layoffs affected Community Operations, Uber's global customer support network that works across multiple business lines and languages. This department has regional and local teams that work closely with local businesses and drivers, Engadget reports .
“Our organizational structure has become too bloated and siloed,” Uber’s vice president of global support, Mega Yetadka, wrote in a memo to her team. She noted that the unit has already “made significant strides” in using AI, but that fully scaling the company’s technology requires “an effective organizational model into which AI can be integrated.”
In addition to announcing the job cuts, Uber has also reportedly asked remote team members to move to hub offices as part of its return-to-work requirement. The company has also previously said it is slowing down hiring due to its use of AI.
