Large-scale cyberattack on registries: how to minimize risks for businesses and citizens

On December 19, 2024, Ukraine suffered one of the largest external attacks that hit state registries. Hackers paralyzed dozens of key systems, leading to the shutdown of important services and jeopardizing the preservation of critical data.

How has this affected public services and citizens?

The attack affected key state registers, including the Unified Register of Legal Entities, the Register of Real Estate Rights, and the Unified Register of Debtors. As a result, services through the Diia application were suspended, as well as a significant number of state services, such as registration of individual entrepreneurs, re-registration of cars, registration of marriages, and other important processes. More than 20 services became unavailable, which led to a complete disruption of business processes.

Who is behind the attack?

According to preliminary data, the attack was carried out by hackers from Russia with the aim of disrupting the operation of critical infrastructure in Ukraine. The attackers claimed to have stolen more than 1 billion lines of data, including information stored on servers in Poland.

What measures will help minimize the consequences of cyberattacks?

Cyberattacks cannot be completely avoided, but their negative impact can be reduced through proper preparation. One of the main ways to protect yourself is by backing up your data.

«Backup is a necessary part of a cyber incident protection strategy. If every minute of downtime can cost significant losses, the speed of data recovery is critically important. We focused on developing solutions such as Flash Backup that allow for rapid data recovery even in crisis conditions,» says Sergey Polyakov, Head of Sales at UCloud .

Flash Backup is not just a standard backup, but a solution that stands out for its speed and efficiency. Using powerful SSD drives and a prepared cloud infrastructure, you can restore data in minutes, not hours!

A special role in this is played by UCloud’s own network of channels connecting Kyiv and Warsaw. Three independent channels with a speed of 100 Gb/s each ensure stable and fast data transfer.

What else needs to be considered for data protection?

In addition to backups, it is important to have a disaster recovery plan (DRP), regularly check security systems, train staff on how to act in the event of a threat, and use modern tools for protection.

Conclusion

Cyberattacks are a real risk that both governments and businesses face. It is impossible to completely avoid threats, but proven protection measures can minimize their impact. Backing up, regularly testing recovery plans, and using reliable solutions are the foundation for ensuring data security and protection against cyber threats.
