Lviv Uklon drivers will anonymously help Lviv fight traffic jams
Uklon has reached an agreement with the Lviv City Council to use anonymized data from its drivers to develop urban mobility. This involves integrating a congestion service that the company created independently and is already testing in several cities.
A dev.ua journalist spoke with Uklon CEO Serhiy Hryshkov about what this data is, how it will work, and why it is important for cities with high traffic.
«We have our own traffic jam service, which is sometimes better than Google’s»
«We have a large amount of anonymized driver data. Our congestion service is a completely self-reported solution. We track and store this data for order distribution and optimal car delivery times,» explains Grishkov.
According to him, Uklon uses Google and other global services as a backup. But in cities where the company is a leader, the data is much richer than in global players.
How will this help the city?
Uklon wants this data to become the basis for «smart traffic lights» and automated traffic management systems — similar to those operating in the US, Singapore, or European countries.
«This is very valuable data for regulating traffic jams and mobility in the city. In Europe, traffic lights are combined into a single ecosystem that provides the most optimal traffic. To launch this, you need high-quality anonymized data. We have it,» says CEO Uklon.
According to various studies, the implementation of such systems can reduce time in traffic jams by up to 40–50%.
The traffic ecosystem: from the center to the entire city
AI-based models will be able to predict a «wave of traffic jams» — how problems at a few intersections can paralyze an entire downtown area.
«This can be launched in the central part of the city, tested and scaled. There is experience of how it works in other countries, and we understand how to adapt it,» says Grishko.
Security and anonymity
Uklon emphasizes: the city will not receive any personal client data. It only concerns the movement of the service’s drivers.
«The data will definitely not be transmitted in raw form. This is access to an anonymized data service that is updated every minute or even second. We do not collect and will never collect client data. Only driver data, and only in an anonymized format,» emphasizes the CEO of Uklon.
Lviv and Kyiv as pilot cities
Uklon already has enough high-quality data in Kyiv and Lviv. In the capital, according to Hryshko, the company has «the most complete and high-quality data set.»
«In cities where we are leaders, our data exceeds the quality of global counterparts. In Kyiv, for example, we have the most complete array. In Lviv, the situation is on par with competitors, but this is enough to start with,» he adds.
What’s next?
Uklon sees the prospect of cooperating with city authorities in creating a smart transportation system that will reduce congestion, make traffic more predictable and comfortable.
«The more data, the higher the quality of the product. This is critically important for Kyiv or Lviv. There is a great desire to work on this,» summarizes the CEO of Uklon.
