The national postal operator Ukrposhta announced 100% automation of all processes for sorting parcels, letters, newspapers, and medicines in its sorting centers.
This was announced by the company's CEO Igor Smilyansky. According to Smilyansky, the transition to fully automated sorting lines was a significant step for the company, because back in 2016, all these processes were carried out exclusively manually. The large-scale automation project lasted 37 months and was implemented during a full-scale war.
The total investment in automation amounted to UAH 690 million. The company emphasizes that these are exclusively its own funds, without attracting loans or state funding.
"We saved millions of hryvnias and euros. For comparison: the automation of Croatia's post office cost 270 million euros, the Polish Post plans to do it for 330 million euros, and we - for 14 million euros," said the CEO of Ukrposhta.
The project was implemented on the basis of domestically produced equipment in partnership with the Ukrainian Intelligent Systems (UIS) company. Smilyansky noted that 98% of spare parts were also manufactured in Ukraine. In addition, modern technologies were implemented, in particular an optical character recognition (OCR) system, which allows for automatic recognition of handwritten addresses on letters, although this technology is still undergoing a training process.
According to the company, the new lines are capable of processing over 3 million parcels per day. In addition, the sorting of letters (over 16 million per month) and newspapers (over 14 million per month), as well as medicines (over 8,000 orders per day) has been automated, with the ability to quickly pack and calculate optimal delivery routes.
The implemented changes have already had a positive impact on delivery speed: over 90% of international parcels cross the border within 24 hours. The company now intends to focus on improving the "last mile" service - the work of branches, post offices and couriers.
Previously, Ukrposhta launched the first 70 post offices in Kyiv and allowed free forwarding of parcels from AliExpress and Temu.
