Ukrtelecom and Kyivstar have started cooperation under the Open Access model. What explains this partnership?

Kyivstar and Ukrtelecom, one of the largest telecom companies in the Ukrainian market, have signed a cooperation agreement under the Open Access model.

As reported by the press service of Kyivstar, the agreement provides for the joint use of telecom infrastructure.

In particular, the project involves the mutual use of part of the networks of both operators, which will allow for faster and more efficient development of optical Internet coverage for the population of Ukraine.

Within the framework of the project, Kyivstar will provide home Internet services and provide access to its own digital ecosystem of services using Ukrtelecom’s non-volatile GPON network, and Ukrtelecom will provide optical Internet services using Kyivstar’s extensive optical network, on an open market basis.

As Kyivstar assures, the implementation of the project will contribute to the further development of the Ukrainian telecom market and expand access to optical Internet and modern digital services for a greater number of Ukrainians, as well as allow for more efficient use of the existing infrastructure and expansion of the geography of service provision.

«Open Access is an opportunity to use the built infrastructure more effectively and implement modern digital services faster. Ukrtelecom, with more than 95,000 km of optical networks, is ready to scale this approach and open up new opportunities for the development of modern telecom services in Ukraine,» commented Ukrtelecom CEO Yuriy Kurmaz on the start of cooperation.

At the same time, cooperation does not change the fact that each operator maintains relations with its subscribers and independently forms its tariff policy and commercial conditions.

The exchange of information between companies is limited to technical data necessary to provide access to the network within the framework of the project.

«Cooperation under the Open Access model is an important step for the development of the Ukrainian telecom market. It allows us to expand access to high-quality optical Internet more quickly, using the already created infrastructure more effectively,» said Kyivstar CEO Oleksandr Komarov.

The first stage of the project, during which the companies will practice the interaction model and the work of the information systems integrations implemented within the project, will start in Odessa, Vinnytsia and Kirovohrad regions and will cover over a million residents of Ukraine. In the future, the geography of cooperation is planned to be expanded to other regions of Ukraine.

Previously, the president of Kyivstar spoke about plans to acquire an insurance and marketplace, abandon EdTech, and develop AI infrastructure.

We also wrote that Ukrtelecom increased its revenue to UAH 2.78 billion due to growing demand for fiber-optic Internet.
