Education.ua named the top 10 universities in Ukraine — all of them teach IT specialists. What interesting technological developments and educational innovations have appeared there?
The educational portal Education.ua has updated its ranking of Ukrainian universities for 2026. All ten universities from the top of the ranking have IT specialties. We tell you what interesting things are being created and launched at these universities: what developments are being presented by students, what laboratories are being opened, and what new educational programs are being offered.
1. Lviv Polytechnic University — free IT training for veterans
At the end of October, the university, together with the NGO "Academy for Heroes", announced a recruitment of veterans for free IT training. There are two areas: Embedded development in C++ and automated testing in JavaScript. In the first year, participants will be taught to work with microcontrollers, sensors, and drone programming. In total, they plan to recruit 30 people.
2. Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv — a training ground for cyberattacks
In April, the Faculty of Information Technology opened CyberVerse, a cyber training ground where students can simulate hacker attacks and learn how to protect computer systems from them. In particular, they can practice protecting critical infrastructure and test how systems withstand the load.
3. Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute — NDA LAB KPI
In September, KPI opened NDA LAB KPI, a laboratory where students can assemble electronic devices, test antennas, and experiment with satellite navigation. It has soldering stations, measuring equipment, SDR receivers, and GPS modules. Thanks to this, students can develop electronic devices and test how they will work in practice.
4. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv — bionic robots and minidrones
In October, the university, together with IT company N-iX and the Lviv Regional Small Academy of Sciences, opened a robotics laboratory. Here, undergraduates, graduate students, and schoolchildren can design robots, including bionic models, educational mini-drones, smart cars, and wheeled robotic platforms.
5. Karazin Kharkiv University — smart glasses for people with visual impairments
In May, the EyeWay team presented a prototype of smart glasses at a university hackathon. The development uses a large language model to help people with visual impairments navigate in space and build safe routes.
6. National University of Life Resources and Environmental Sciences — drones that help monitor the condition of fields
In October, university students explored how to use drones and digital maps to protect crops. Using special cameras, drones can collect data on the condition of plants, and software can help identify suspicious areas. This allows farmers to find potential problems before they become visible on the ground.
7. Chernivtsi National University - parking application and system for finding places for new trees
In early November, the university’s teams took home all three prizes at the Chernivtsi Open Data Hackathon 3.0. Their projects included a prototype of a paid parking app with license plate recognition and a green space analysis system that will help the city determine where it’s best to plant new trees.
8. Ukrainian State University of Science and Technology — Medical Implants and New Materials
In October, university scientists presented their developments at industrial exhibitions in Kyiv. Among the research are individual medical implants with long-lasting antimicrobial effects, which are being developed for military and civilian medicine. The university is also working on materials for hydrogen production, energy-saving technologies, and solutions for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
9. Kyiv Aviation Institute — joint engineering program with MIT
In October, KAI, together with MIT, launched the Ukraine Innovation and Engineering Lab. For ten weeks, program participants will work on real-world tasks from Ukrainian MilTech companies, from robotics to autonomous systems, and create prototypes of their own solutions.
10. Vasyl Stefanyk Carpathian National University — AI for Energy
In May, the university's student startup competition presented EnerMind Grid, an AI platform project for optimizing energy consumption. Its idea is to use algorithms to predict risks and help businesses use electricity more efficiently. Potential users include enterprises, energy traders, and green energy companies.
“A modern product does not fit within the boundaries of one specialty.” The rector of Lviv Polytechnic talks about AI, defense tech, and the blurring of the line between IT and engineering
