"All life on the phone": Rakuten Viber revealed how much time Ukrainians spend on average on calls and chats
Approximately 40% of Ukrainians spend at least four hours on their phones every day, mostly chatting on instant messengers and making calls. These are the results of a survey conducted by Rakuten Viber among users of its official channel in Ukraine.
Approximately 40% of Ukrainians spend at least four hours on their phones every day, mostly chatting on instant messengers and making calls. These are the results of a survey conducted by Rakuten Viber among users of its official channel in Ukraine.
According to the company’s press release, over 36,000 respondents took part in the survey. The most active age group was 34–45 years old, and over 50% of all respondents were under 45 years old.
When asked «How much time do you spend on your phone per day?» 38% answered that they spend 4–6 hours on their smartphone. Another 31% of users said that they spend 2–4 hours or up to 2 hours per day. Thus, almost 70% of Ukrainians use mobile devices for communication for a long time every day.
Separately, the company asked what Ukrainians choose more often — calls or chats. It turned out that despite the popularity of text messages, calls remain the main method of communication.
52% answered: «I prefer to call, but sometimes I have to write.»
27% prefer chats, but call from time to time.
Only 10% of respondents completely abandoned voice conversations.
According to the Rakuten Viber team, such results may be related to the conditions of full-scale war: in situations of uncertainty or unstable internet, a voice call allows you to get a response faster or make sure of the safety of the interlocutor. The human factor also plays an important role, many users need live communication, not just text.
Viber remains one of the most popular messengers in Ukraine, according to Kantar CMeter, in 2023 it was consistently among the top 5 mobile applications in terms of audience activity. According to the company itself, over 97% of Ukrainian smartphone users have Viber on their device. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the platform has been actively adapting its services to the needs of the local market: introducing channels, a notification service from government agencies, chatbots for volunteer initiatives, etc.
