The Ushkuynik Research and Production Center in the Russian Federation has developed a marine drone equipped with a coil with a protected fiber-optic cable. What are its capabilities?
As reported by «Military», the Russian Black Sea Fleet has already received this drone for testing.
The new drone can carry FPV drones and engage Ukrainian naval UAVs. It can also act as a kamikaze drone.
The fiber optic cable that controls the drone unwinds from a reel and lies on the bottom. Defense Express notes that this reduces the chance of being struck by another ship, but a marine drone with fiber optics also has weaknesses.
«Marine drones need to travel tens, or even hundreds of kilometers, but without a repeater or signal amplifier, it is unlikely that a cable will be able to be made longer than 100 km, although even these are quite optimistic calculations. At the same time, the minimum distance from the occupied Kinburn Spit to Odessa is about 62 km,» the publication writes.
It is noted that such a drone can carry a small payload, but can transport FPV drones for strikes on Mykolaiv, Odessa, or Kherson.
Recall that in the spring of this year, the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Kyrylo Budanov, together with specialists, publicly presented a series of Magura naval strike drones. Among them is the Magura V7 drone, which for the first time in history destroyed an enemy combat aircraft.
The GUR announced the «Magura era» and for the first time publicly presented new versions of Magura naval drones, which can operate in a swarm and shoot down Russian aircraft
