Apple Intelligence gets new features, including the much-anticipated ChatGPT integration with iOS 18.2

Apple has released new Apple Intelligence features: an image creation platform, Genmoji, improved writing tools, and ChatGPT integration with iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2.

ChatGPT integration is one of the most anticipated features , as Siri could give you the ability to ask ChatGPT certain questions that it can’t ask directly. While Apple’s Intelligence tools can’t write text for you, the company now offers a “compose” option that prompts ChatGPT to generate text based on the prompt, TechCrunch reports .

In iOS 18.1, Apple already provided tools for writing texts that were limited to rewriting a block of text in a friendly, professional, or concise style, or simply tapping the rewrite button without any input. In iOS 18.2, you can describe the changes you want to make to Apple Intelligence, which will allow you to customize the editing.

Users can manage the integration with ChatGPT. By default, you do not need to be logged in to your ChatGPT account to use this feature, and OpenAI will not store your queries. However, you can log in to your account to access higher-quality models.

The new Image Playground feature lets you create images in different styles using a dedicated app. You can also use your own image or a friend's image to create an AI-powered remix by describing different scenarios and settings. Users can choose an image style from animation or illustration. Apple is using Image Playground in apps like Messages, and will also provide an API for third-party developers.

Similar to Image Playground, Apple will help you create a new emoji. To do this, you need to describe the emoji you want when the emoji keyboard is open. You will see a highlighted description when creating a new emoji is available. You can also use images from your photo library to create your own Genmoji.

Apple is also introducing visual intelligence for the iPhone 16, which lets you point to an object by long-pressing the camera button, and lets you search Google or ask ChatGPT about things in the frame. The company can also point to text to save a phone number (this is already available through Live Text) or translate menus.

Notes also gets an Image Wand tool that turns rough sketches into illustrative images. You can trace a sketch in a note and the tool will automatically convert it into an image.

The company also expanded Apple Intelligence language support to localized English in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. Previously, the company only supported US English for its AI feature set.

In the future, Apple will provide developers with access to APIs related to Apple Intelligence for integration into their applications.
