Anthropic said its technology has become a "weapon" for hackers to carry out sophisticated cyberattacks.
The company says its AI was used to write code that carried out cyberattacks, while in another case, North Korean fraudsters used Claude to get remote jobs at leading American companies, writes the BBC.
Hackers used Claude to write code to break into at least 17 different organizations, including government agencies.
They used Claude to “make both tactical and strategic decisions, such as what data to steal and how to formulate extortion demands that psychologically pressure the victim.”
Claude even offered ransom amounts for the victims.
Additionally, Anthropic said that “North Korean operatives” used its models to create fake profiles to apply for remote jobs at Fortune 500 US technology companies.
The company emphasized that the use of AI in this scheme is “a fundamentally new phase for employment fraud.”
AI was used to write job applications, and once the scammers were employed, it was used to help translate messages and write code.
Anthropic claims that it has been able to disrupt the attackers' actions, and it has reported these incidents to the authorities, as well as improved its detection tools.
Recall that ESET recently discovered the first ransomware virus based on artificial intelligence . It was called PromptLock.
