Microsoft announced that they are also launching a new Office Agent in Copilot chat, which is powered by Anthropic models and can create PowerPoint presentations and Word documents in the spirit of «vibe working» using a chatbot.
«Today, we are introducing vibworking in Microsoft 365 Copilot with Agent Mode in Office apps and Office Agent in Copilot Chat. Just as vibcoding transformed software development, the latest reasoning models in Copilot open up opportunities to improve agent productivity for Office,» the corporation noted.
Agent Mode in Excel and Word is a more powerful version of Copilot that Microsoft has added to its Office apps. It’s designed to make complex parts of Excel more accessible to non-expert users, notes The Verge.
«These are not just short answers, but presentations or documents that are ready to use. Honestly, this is work that an intern does, and it is done in a matter of minutes,» Microsoft believes.
Agent mode takes a complex task and breaks it down into manageable steps through planning and reasoning. It then uses OpenAI’s GPT-5 model to break each step of document creation down into individual tasks and execute them.
Microsoft says its Excel agent mode has an accuracy of 57,2% on SpreadsheetBench, a test that measures the ability of an AI model to edit real spreadsheets. This score puts agent mode above Shortcut.ai, ChatGPT’s agent with .xlsx support, and Claude Files Opus 4.1. However, it still falls short of human accuracy, which is 71,3%.
Agent Mode in Word goes beyond Word’s existing AI features for writing, rewriting, and summarizing. It allows Copilot to draft content, suggest improvements, and refine what elements are needed during the document creation process in an interactive dialogue format.
Agent Mode in Copilot for Excel and Word is now available in the Frontier program for Microsoft 365 Copilot customers or Microsoft 365 Personal/Family subscribers. At release, this mode in Excel and Word is only available in the web versions, with desktop support coming soon.
