As he wrote on his Twitter channel, about 95% of personal messages on WhatsApp are backed up in plain text on Apple/Google servers, rather than encrypted using the E2E method.
«Encrypting backups is optional, and few people enable it, let alone use strong passwords. Even if you encrypt WhatsApp backups with a strong password, your messages still end up in unencrypted cloud backups because over 90% of the people you message haven’t done the same,» Durov «slammed» WhatsApp’s competitors.
