"Units need this, but I solved my problem." A Ukrainian Army officer created a web-based analogue of minicom that allows you to connect to devices directly from a browser — without installing programs

Ukrainian military and former IT professional Andriy Kondratiev created a web application for working with serial ports — and did it with the help of AI.
According to him, it was an experiment with so-called «vibecoding» — an approach where artificial intelligence takes on a significant part of the work.
Problem: how to debug hardware without your computer
The idea for the project arose from a real-life problem. In civilian life, the developer worked with devices that connect via a serial port. For this, he used minicom, a classic Linux tool.
But in the field or on someone else’s computer, a problem arises: there is no necessary software, a different OS (for example, Windows), there is no time to install anything. «And you need access already, because you reproduce bugs,» he explains.
Solution: Serial port directly in the browser
The result is a web application that allows you to work with the serial port directly from the browser — without installing additional software.
The user opens the page, connects to the device, and accesses the terminal.
In fact, it is a web analogue of minicom that works even on a limited stack — HTML, CSS, and JavaScript — and can be deployed via GitHub Pages.
What the application can do
Despite its experimental nature, the functionality is quite extensive:
connecting to multiple ports simultaneously;
management via tabs or tiling (multiple terminals in one window);
setting baud rate, parity, stop bits and other parameters;
support for themes and languages;
import and export of configurations;
installation as a PWA (actually as a desktop application);
AI as a co-developer
The author used Claude to create the project. According to him, it was AI that helped implement the idea without a complicated setup and long coding time.
The author himself does not overestimate the scale of the product: «Does anyone need this? I think only a few people.»
However, the approach is typical for modern engineers to solve their own problem, quickly make an MVP, and release it into the open.
