Ukrainian designers wrote an open letter to ATypI demanding the removal of the Russian speaker due to her work for Astra Linux, which is used by the Russian military
Ukrainian and foreign designers have sent an open letter to the international typographic association ATypI, demanding that the participation of Russian designer Alexandra Korolkova in the ATypI Sharjah 2026 conference be reconsidered. Korolkova participated in the creation of fonts for Astra Linux, a Russian operating system, a special version of which can be used by state and military structures of the Russian Federation.

The authors of the appeal are asking to either remove Korolkova from the conference program or at least suspend her participation until the association conducts an ethical review of this case.
ATypI is an international non-profit association that brings together type designers, typographers, and other industry professionals. Its next conference will be held October 28–31 in Sharjah, UAE. Korolkova remains on the program for now.
On the ATypI website, she is presented as the art director of ParaType. In 2016, ParaType, together with the Russian RusBitTech, the developer of Astra Linux, introduced two new fonts — PT Astra Sans and PT Astra Serif. They were created by Alexandra Korolkova and Izabella Chayeva. Korolkova also owns 5% of the ParaType company, according to the corporate registry data provided by RBC.
The manufacturer of Astra Linux Special Edition reported back in 2015 about FSB certificates that allowed the system to be used for processing information that constitutes a state secret. The company also reported that Astra Linux Special Edition can be used in the systems of state and military bodies of the Russian Federation.
So the authors of the open letter ask the question: is the designer responsible only for how well a product is made, or also for who and what it serves?
In addition, in 2022, ParaType director Anna Yakupova publicly supported Russia's attempt to annex occupied Ukrainian territories. After that, the well-known resource Fonts In Use stopped linking to the ParaType website.
Because of this situation, two Ukrainians who were also invited to ATypI Sharjah 2026 — designer Oleksandra Korchevska-Tsekhosh and font designer and calligrapher Oleksiy Chekal — decided not to go to the conference.
"We didn't want to opt out. We wanted to talk about typography," the open letter said.
Its authors believe that now the Ukrainian participants are forced to bear the consequences of the unresolved situation. So they have a choice: either to go on the same stage with Korolkova, or to refuse the professional opportunity. The signatories also call on the association to create a procedure for cases when the professional activities of the participants are related to the military, security, propaganda, occupation or sanctions infrastructure of states.
The authors propose to give Korolkova an opportunity to respond to the facts presented and ask ATypI to publish a reasoned decision by September 25. In the appeal itself, they also recall the words of ATypI President Nada Abdalla, who stated this year that "font is not neutral" and is connected to people, cultures, and the future.
"Professional excellence does not negate professional responsibility," the authors of the letter conclude.
Previously, dev.ua wrote that in 2022, ParaType head Anna Yakupova publicly supported Russia's attempt to annex occupied Ukrainian territories. After that, representatives of the design and IT community called on large technology companies to stop cooperating with ParaType.
