FDE is not a salesperson. A former Palantir employee explained that companies misunderstood one of the hottest IT professions

Former Palantir employee Vinu Ganesh, who once led an internal program for future forward-deployed engineers (FDEs), believes that many tech companies have misunderstood the profession. Instead of engineers who help improve products based on real customer problems, FDEs are increasingly being hired as salespeople or customer service specialists.
A forward-deployed engineer is a developer who understands a company’s problem, helps integrate or refine the product for it, and then passes the acquired experience back to the product team. This is how Palantir saw the role, says Ganesh. When he led Project Frontline, regular software engineers were offered to move to the FDE team for a few months and work closer to customers.
To do this, employees could be temporarily relocated to corporate housing in another city. They had two mentors at the same time — a manager from the FDE side and a manager from the regular development side. Some of the participants remained to work in the FDE after the rotation, while others returned to the product teams. Product developers did not always feel how urgent the real customer’s problems were. On the contrary, the FDE saw them firsthand. So the rotation was supposed to bring these two worlds closer together.
Ganesh sees the FDE as an extension of the product team, first and foremost. The engineer should solve a customer problem and then come back with an answer to the question: what did we just learn about our product? For example, what feature should be added, what needs to be reworked, or what problem is recurring across many customers.
Ganesh also notes that some companies use FDE as a way to compensate for a lack of product-market fit—a situation where a product hasn't yet found a strong enough market demand. He believes that FD engineers shouldn't force people to buy a product that doesn't solve a problem that's important enough for them.
The “confusion” with the meaning of the name is happening against the backdrop of a certain boom in the profession. Earlier, dev.ua wrote that the demand for FDEs has increased by 729% over the year. Such engineers are actively hired by OpenAI, Anthropic, Palantir, and Stripe.
