ChatGPT is quickly becoming one of the largest consumer apps in the world, with around 600 million monthly active users, TechCrunch notes. To capitalize on this popularity, OpenAI is looking to expand its presence into other consumer areas, such as online shopping, social media, and personal devices.
The potential «Login with ChatGPT» feature could help OpenAI compete with other big tech companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, which help people with a wide range of online services, including a quick way to log in to third-party apps.
Earlier this month, OpenAI launched a preview of the «Login with ChatGPT» feature for developers in Codex CLI, an open-source terminal AI coding tool. The feature allowed developers to connect their ChatGPT Free, Plus, or Pro accounts to their API accounts. OpenAI offered Plus users $5 in API credits for logging in via ChatGPT, and Pro users $50.
The company is currently gauging interest in the feature and is asking developers to fill out a form that asks them to specify the user base of their apps, ranging from businesses with fewer than 1,000 weekly users to mass-market apps with more than 100 million weekly users. The form also asks how much developers are currently paying for AI features and whether they are OpenAI API customers.
CEO Sam Altman noted in 2023 that the company might consider «login with OpenAI» in 2024. However, OpenAI began working on the feature in earnest in 2025. It’s unclear when the login feature will be available to ChatGPT users and how many companies have signed up to be a part of it.
This isn’t the first time the company has challenged big tech companies. Last summer, OpenAI announced its entry into the search engine market with a new product, SearchGPT. It’s an AI-powered search engine with real-time access to information on the Internet.
