Vodafone has begun the modernization of the telecom infrastructure of the fixed-line operator «FRINET», which has been part of the Vodafone group since August 2023. It involves the construction of a GPON network in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Dnipro.
As noted in the press release, about 35,000 households in these cities are connected to GPON. The modernization will ensure the operation of the Internet for up to 72 hours «even during long-term power outages.» In addition, data transmission via GPON reaches 1 Gbit/s (≈1000 Mbit/s), which is 10 times faster than the speed of conventional Internet. Vodafone reports that the service costs from 125 UAH/month.
General Director of FREENET LLC Sergey Skrypnikov emphasized the company’s interest in implementing new technologies:
«We have already managed to ensure the availability of energy-efficient Internet for residents of over 1.2 million households. Our goal is to provide each client with stable Internet that will work reliably even in difficult energy conditions,» said Serhiy Skrypnikov, General Director of FREENET LLC.
The provider’s specialists continue to actively build and commission new GPON zones, and by the end of 2025 they plan to modernize the network in over 2,200 high-rise buildings. houses in Kyiv, Zhytomyr, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk and Dnipro.
In 2024, Vodafone upgraded its subsidiary Vega’s network to GPON in 155 homes in Kyiv, Lviv, and Odessa and built a new GPON network in over 4,000 homes in cities of presence.
Recall that last summer, Forbes Ukraine compiled a list of the largest Internet providers in Ukraine. Vodafone Ukraine took 4th place out of 250,000 subscribers who receive fixed Internet services through two acquired companies — Vega and Freenet. It was noted that 80% of Vega subscribers have Internet using non-volatile GPON technology. Freenet has 43% of such subscribers.
