"It turns out that "poor" Ukraine prepares people for "rich" Europe": the new rector of KPI on the departure of students abroad

About 40% of the graduates enrolled abroad - this is the figure given by school principals. Safety is the main reason. What does KPI do to attract students, in particular, future Aitivians, and can you compete with universities abroad?

Anatoliy Melnychenko, who was elected to the post of rector of KPI named after DOU, told about this in an interview with DOU. Igor Sikorsky in the summer of this year.

According to Melnichenko, KPI has significantly updated educational IT programs and created new ones: among them are "Robotics", "Humanitarian demining", "European studies", etc.

The university has also expanded the list of optional disciplines and involves business students from the IT industry. We have constant interaction with EPAM, GlobalLogic, Infopulse, Genesis, DataArt, Netcracker.

The rector of KPI added: " Among all specialties, cyber security is in high demand here. This year, there were 7.6 applications for one budget place, the passing score for the budget was 170.5. We enrolled 132 people in the budgetary form of education and 92 in the contract".

In addition, KPI has more than 70 dual education contracts, when theoretical training is combined with practical work.

"In particular, on November 5, we signed a memorandum with one major energy company of Ukraine," Melnychenko noted.

Melnychenko believes that undergraduate education in Ukraine is quite competitive with Western education.

"For example, KPI has a peculiarity — the fundamentality of training. Sometimes it is criticized at first, but then its importance is understood. In the first courses, we give in-depth fundamental disciplines - higher mathematics, probability theory, physics, theoretical mechanics, electrical engineering. If we are talking about IT specialties, then, in addition to math analysis, computer discrete mathematics, students study algorithms and data structures, etc. ", says the rector.

At the same time, scientific equipment is needed to prepare a master's degree, so Ukrainian universities lose somewhat here, says Melnychenko.

"We are doing our best to update it here. In the summer, they received new equipment from USAID for training specialists who provide cyber protection in automated systems of critical infrastructure. And also from Siemens for power engineers, from Huawei for specialists in the field of electronics and energy," explained Melnychenko.

In general, modern equipment and laboratories for IT departments are purchased with funds from a special fund. However, they are not enough, because utility costs make up the lion's share of the fund's costs, the rector noted.

However, you solve this problem in cooperation with partners.

"First of all, they hand over the equipment to us. For example, DTEK is for renewable energy laboratories. Helping Ajax, the head of the company Oleksandr Konotopsky is a graduate of our university. He shows a good example of a responsible attitude towards his alma mater. There are foreign companies that help - Siemens, USAID. We are gradually moving towards renewal," Melnychenko added.

This year, there were 2,650 places in the IT specialty, of which 1,752 were budget places.

To the question of whether it is necessary to reduce the number of budget places in Ukraine, the rector answered: It is not a question of reducing or increasing. Maybe next year we won't have as many children as there are budget places. Then, of course, what should be reduced. The number of budgetary places should be such as to prepare personnel for the economy, it should ensure the sustainable development of the state for the future. And it will not be provided only by lawyers and economists. High-tech industry needs to be developed. I am very confused by the fact that the state invests in the training of specialists, and then they go abroad. It turns out that "poor" Ukraine prepares people for "rich" Europe. If we are already training specialists with budget funds, then they should develop our state .
