After being fired from his job, a Ukrainian developer decided to create the space MMORPG WarpScape on his own

After being laid off from his job, Ukrainian IT professional Yevgeny Mykhailychenko decided not to look for a new job but to fully devote himself to developing his own indie game. His project was a large-scale space MMORPG called WarpScape, in which the developer has already invested over 3,000 hours of work.
Yevgeny spoke about his experience and the start of development in a post on Reddit. According to him, the decision to give up a stable income in favor of solo development was not easy, but the results and the involvement of the first users motivate him to move forward.
"Instead of a stable salary, I got 3,000+ hours of development, a bunch of bugs, sleepless nights, and a game that needs to be constantly refined. Sometimes I think I should have just found a new job. But then I go into the game, see people spending dozens and even hundreds of hours there, and I realize that I want to see this thing through to the end," Mykhailichenko notes.
Gameplay and key mechanics of WarpScape
WarpScape is being created as a single persistent universe without instances or separate servers. The developer has focused on direct real-time ship control without timers or table battles.
Among the main features of the game:
All calculations of positions, hits, and damage occur on the server side, making the outcome of the battle dependent on the pilot’s skill, not on the speed of the internet connection (ping).
The game world consists of 10 hand-crafted sectors, which are unlocked as the pilot level increases. Each sector has its own dangers, and the PvP mechanics are clearly divided into safe and dangerous ("Dark Zone") areas.
All players start with the starting ship, the Star Blaster, and then the progression tree branches out over 10 levels. Players can choose between fast interceptors, heavy fighters, or hybrid variants.
There are 11 types of special equipment and abilities available to adapt to your own play style, from Bulwark force shields and cloaking fields to chain lightning, plasma balls, and ultimate abilities like Singularity.
Players can collect ore in asteroid fields, process it at mining stations, and use the resources to build new buildings.
WarpScape supports clans with ranks and shared channels, as well as spatial (3D) voice chat, the volume of which fades with distance.
Using generative AI
The description on the Steam project page also states that generative artificial intelligence tools were used during development. AI helped create some of the visual elements (icons, textures, interface), soundtrack, story texts and their translation. At the same time, all content was manually edited before integration into the game, and WarpScape itself does not generate content in real time during the gameplay.
Indie development in Ukraine remains a popular track among IT professionals who seek to implement their own ideas after working in IT companies. In particular, the use of generative AI is becoming an important tool for solo developers, allowing them to reduce the costs and time required to create graphic and text assets for large-scale game worlds.
