According to TechCrunch, this will be Waymo’s second international expansion after Tokyo.
The publication reminds that Waymo already has ties to the UK, as back in 2019 the company acquired the British startup Latent Logic.
The latter was born out of Oxford University’s computer science department and uses machine learning to make self-driving car simulations more realistic. As part of the acquisition, Waymo launched an engineering center in Oxford.
Waymo announced in a blog post that its Jaguar I-Pace electric cars, equipped with autonomous driving technology, will begin driving on public roads in London in the coming weeks.
However, Waymo will initially use drivers, and only later will it launch tests of unmanned systems.
The publication notes that the exact timing of the launch of the unmanned robotaxi service in London will depend on the legal regulation of these operations by the UK government.
Previously, dev.ua wrote that Waymo, the unmanned systems division of parent company Alphabet (Google), has become a regular transport in San Francisco. With a local SIM card, you can install the application and call a robot — an unmanned Jaguar I-Pace.
We also wrote about a curious case when a Waymo self-driving taxi refused to take a passenger to the airport, instead driving in circles in a parking lot.
