Now, if you receive a message in a foreign language, simply press and hold it and select “Translate.” After that, you can choose the language for the translation and download it to use the feature in the future, writes TechCrunch.
Message translation is available in individual chats, groups, and channel updates.
WhatsApp notes that translations occur on the user's device, where the messenger cannot see them, which means that messages remain encrypted.
“With over 3 billion users in over 180 countries, we’re always working to keep our users connected, no matter where they are in the world,” WhatsApp wrote on its blog. “But we understand that sometimes language can be a barrier to getting things done or expressing your true feelings. That’s why we’re excited to introduce message translations on WhatsApp so you can communicate more easily in different languages.”
Message translations became available for Android and iPhone users starting Tuesday.
