Wi-Fi Trace Unmasks Frontline Positions: "Militarnyi" Explains Risks and Ways to Minimize Them

In modern warfare, Wi-Fi is not «invisible.» Networks and gadgets create a trail that allows the enemy to locate equipment, people, and routes. A new technical analysis explains how this trail is created and why it becomes a handy marker for reconnaissance.

This is what «Military» writes with reference to an article in Skylinker. The authors explain that the Wi-Fi trace arises from service frames on the air: beacons (Beacon) with SSID/BSSID, probe requests from clients with a list of known networks, as well as association and control packets. They are intercepted by any receiver in the range from a smartphone to electronic intelligence equipment. The set of metadata allows you to restore the «life pattern» of the unit and pinpoint the coordinates.

The second layer of threat is formed by manufacturer telemetry and third-party SDKs in applications. Smartphones, automotive electronics and IoT regularly perform background scans and send BSSIDs, signal levels, timestamps and sometimes coordinates to large data sets. «Airplane mode» does not guarantee silence on all models: some firmwares retain background scans for geolocation. Combining such telemetry with radio direction finding dramatically increases the accuracy of reconnaissance.

The consequences are practical and very dangerous. The adversary can more quickly detect UAV command posts and ground control stations, track movements, de-anonymize units through SSID names, and select targets for cyberattacks.

To reduce your footprint, experts advise switching to a wired connection as much as possible, limiting Wi-Fi to short sessions, reducing power and hiding access points, turning off unnecessary radio modules on gadgets, using neutral SSIDs, enabling MAC randomization, and regularly changing BSSIDs or performing factory resets. When specialized PER tools are not available, it is worth at least constantly monitoring the airwaves with simple Wi-Fi/BLE scanners.

Global Wi-Fi maps are generated from both open OSINT services (e.g. WiGLE or Skyhook) and closed telemetry from OS and device manufacturers. The longer a network is «lit», the more accurate its location becomes. There is no absolute protection, but combining technical settings with the discipline of radio and cyber hygiene significantly reduces the risk and literally saves lives.

Previously, dev.ua wrote about how the Cabinet of Ministers adopted a resolution that makes significant changes to the Plan for the Allocation and Use of Radio Frequency Spectrum, in particular, they relate to Wi-Fi 6E and the deadline for the use of 3G technology.
