Windows 11 by default "likes" to put files on the system C drive, even if the computer has a second SSD with a lot of free space. The man told how he changed a few Windows settings and stopped constantly freeing up space on the system drive.

Abhinav Raj told about this on XDA.

His PC has two drives installed, totaling about 1.2TB. The problem was that the second drive remained almost empty, while the system SSD was gradually filling up with OneDrive, new files, and system data.

One of the main "eaters" of space was OneDrive. By default, its local folder is located on the system drive, and if the user saves files from the cloud offline, it can grow quite quickly. In addition, the "Desktop", "Documents" and "Pictures" folders can also be included in OneDrive, if backup is enabled for them.

The author decided not to transfer files manually, but to move the OneDrive folder itself to the second SSD. To do this, you need to unlink the computer in OneDrive settings, move the folder to another drive, and when you log in again, specify it as the new sync location. After that, OneDrive will store local copies of files there, and not on drive C.

This setting is located at Settings/System/Storage /Advanced Storage Settings/Where new content is saved. There you can choose which drive Windows will save different types of new content to by default. For example, instead of C, specify D and thus reduce the load on the system SSD.

Previously, dev.ua wrote about Ukrainian IT guy Oleksiy Krychevsky, who created DiskSwell, a macOS utility to prevent "disappearing" free space. The idea came after the developer found a Safari file on his Mac that had imperceptibly grown to 51 GB.
