«Nitter.net is down and development is temporarily halted. I am seeking legal advice and will not comment on the details for now,» the project’s author, under the pseudonym zedeus, wrote on the project’s website.
The Register, in turn, writes that the Nitter-related service XCancel has also received removal notices for violating the rules.
The XCancel homepage states that the service is suspended «until further notice.»
The Register also recalled that Musk has positioned himself as the ultimate supporter of freedom of speech on social media, which clearly does not correspond to his position on the Nitter project.
The Nitter repository is still on GitHub, but it is marked as archived and read-only.
Recall that Nitter allowed users to read posts on X without having to register an account. The service also allowed reading posts without ads, and the user’s IP address could not be tracked. In addition, it was much faster than the official X client.
This isn’t the first time Nitter has received unwanted attention from X. In January 2024, zedeus announced the end of the project after Twitter removed the guest account feature. However, the project was revived a year later, finding a way around these restrictions.
However, it seems to have prompted X’s lawyers to take a more active role in this matter.
