Ivano-Frankivsk region has the largest number of subscribers who have internet based on xPON — almost 75%, while in Kyiv only 17%. How the dynamics of the introduction of this technology in Ukraine changed

Over the previous year and a half, the number of homes in which xPON technology was connected increased from 2.5 million to 3.9 million. That is, it is 46% of users of all fixed Internet technologies. 54% use other technologies such as FTTX, DOCCIS, etc. This was told to DOU by Yurii Matsyk, director of broadband Internet access infrastructure development at the Ministry of Digital Affairs.
How the dynamics of xPON implementation in Ukraine changed during 2022-2024
In 2022, Kirovohrad and Volyn regions were in the leaders — 62% and 61% of subscribers, respectively.
In 2023, the largest increase in the implementation of this technology was observed in the Ternopil and Kherson regions — 28% and 27%, respectively.
This year, the leaders of 4 regions, which implemented xPON the most: Ivano-Frankivsk and Chernivtsi 11% each, Cherkasy and Zakarpattia 10% each.

As can be seen from the graph, Kyiv still occupies the last place in statistics (approximately 17% of subscribers).
"Internet networks were built and scaled first in Ukraine in Kyiv, so most of them are outdated. There was no need to update them before a full scale invasion. Due to the population density and the scale of the city, ISPs need to attract a lot of investment to rebuild their networks to work on xPON. Currently, 172,000 subscribers have access to xPON in Kyiv. In 2023, this number was much smaller — 72,000," Matsyk explained the low level of xPON implementation in the capital.
