"Up to 1,000 reviews for one vacancy are the Hunger Games": Ukrainian developer decides to leave IT after three years. He thanks the industry for the excess weight, stress, sleepless nights, financial instability and more

Ukrainian fullstack/frontend developer Anatoliy Yakovenko announced that he is ending his career in IT after three years of work. According to him, the industry has lost some of its appeal due to the development of AI, high competition for vacancies, and project instability.

Yakovenko wrote about his decision on LinkedIn. He notes that he now plans to move to miltech, but no longer as a developer.

Yakovenko says that he came to IT at a time when artificial intelligence was just beginning to be actively used in programming.

According to him, back then, part of a developer’s job was to independently search for solutions — on Stack Overflow, GitHub, and other resources.

«You find it and everything works, a sense of self-importance as a specialist… Now it’s enough to just write a prompt,» he wrote.

It was the changing role of the programmer under the influence of AI that became one of the reasons why the developer decided to change his professional direction.

At the same time, Yakovenko does not deny the benefits of AI tools. Among the things for which he is grateful to IT, the developer specifically mentioned the skills of using AI.

Yakovenko cites the situation on the labor market as another reason for his disappointment. «I’m not talking about finding a job at all. Up to 1,000 applications for one vacancy are like the Hunger Games,» he wrote.

According to him, problems arise not only at the stage of job search. He also criticizes the modern hiring process, in which a candidate can go through several stages of selection, receive an offer, and then lose his job due to a project stoppage.

«You can go through all the circles of hell, get an offer, and then be fired a month later because the project is on hold or something,» the developer noted.

He does not provide statistics that would confirm that there are up to 1,000 candidates for each IT vacancy, so this figure is his personal assessment of the situation during the job search.

Despite his decision to leave the profession, Yakovenko cites several positive outcomes from his three years in the industry. Among them are new professional experience, acquaintances and friends, new knowledge, the opportunity to regularly use English at work, and the development of the skill of not giving up.

At the same time, he names excess weight, stress, lack of sleep, and financial instability among the negative consequences.

«Thank you IT for a new experience, new, interesting acquaintances, friends, new, cool knowledge, using English at work, improving the „not giving up“ skill and skills in using AI,» Yakovenko wrote. The developer calls miltech his next professional direction. «For now, I can only say that I’m going to miltech, but not as a developer,» he noted. Yakovenko did not name a specific company or position.
