The CEO of crypto exchange Bitget, Gracie Chen, reported losses of $351.6 million due to unauthorized interference.
“Bitget’s security systems detected unauthorized transfers from some of our hot wallets. Our security team immediately activated emergency response protocols,” she said on social media X.
At the same time, as she assured, “cold” wallets remain fully protected.
She added that the full amount of the damages is covered by the Bitget User Protection Fund, which currently stands at over $464 million.
As Gracie Chen assured, anomalous transfer addresses have been identified and withdrawals have been temporarily suspended as a precautionary measure.
Law enforcement agencies are also involved in investigating the situation.
“We will not speculate on the attack vector until the investigation is complete,” she said.
However, in a later comment, Gracie Chen stated that investigators had discovered Internet Protocol addresses associated with VPN services previously used by the North Korean hacking group.
Thus, the cryptocurrency exchange Bitget suspects that North Korean hackers may be involved in the security breach.
Chen said the specific intrusion method used to penetrate Bitget’s systems remains the subject of a technical investigation, CNBC reported.
The affected assets included ether, XRP, USDT, USDC, Avalanche, and BNB on the Ethereum, XRP Ledger, Avalanche, BNB Smart Chain, and Arbitrum networks. Previous estimates of the loss of funds on the network were around $183 million, but Bitget said that this analysis did not take into account activity on all affected blockchains.
As dev.ua reported, unknown hackers withdrew approximately 4,000 BTC ($320 million) from the wallet of the Liquid Network sidechain federation.
