As reported on the GitHub blog, each Copilot plan will include a certain monthly amount of GitHub AI credits with the option to purchase them additionally.
Usage will be calculated based on token consumption, including input, output, and cached tokens, and this system will replace the current Premium Request Unit (PRU) system.
«This change aligns Copilot pricing with actual usage and is an important step towards a sustainable and reliable business and experience with Copilot for all users,» the blog said.
To help users prepare, a «bill preview» will be available starting in May, providing an idea of upcoming costs starting June 1. This functionality will be available to users on the «Billing Overview» page after logging in to github.com.
The change in payment approach was explained by the fact that «Copilot is no longer the same product as it was a year ago,» and it has evolved from a simple assistant into an agent platform capable of performing long and multi-stage sessions.
It is noted that the cost of the basic plan does not change (Copilot Pro remains at $10/month, Pro+ — $39/month, Business — $19/user/month, and Enterprise — $39/user/month).
Code completion and next edit suggestions remain included on all plans and do not consume AI credits.
As dev.ua reported, GitHub announced last year that it was giving developers access to third-party AI agents for programming with the launch of a new service, Agent HQ. Programmers were able to try out Codex from OpenAI, Claude from Anthropic, Jules from Google, xAI, and Devin from Cognition on GitHub.
In February, Claude Sonnet 4.6 also appeared on GitHub Copilot.
