Co-founder of the Aerial Intelligence Support Center: "Training of UAV operators has been partially suspended in Ukraine"
Ihor Lutsenko, a serviceman of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and co-founder of the Air Intelligence Support Center, said that large training centers in a number of regions of Ukraine may face a large number of flight bans from the command of the Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the week.
«It sounds wild, but this is now reality. The army has blocked its own training. Training of the kind of forces that are now responsible for 80% of the defeat and almost 100% of the intelligence information on the front line,» Lutsenko wrote on his Facebook.
According to him, the number of flight bans reaches almost 70-80% during the week, and therefore cadets who are learning to use drones do not have the opportunity to practice and «cannot master the tools properly.»
«It’s not everywhere and not always, but very, very often. Too often,» the military man notes.
The reasons for the restrictions are various: alarms, flights of large aircraft, internal decisions of the command. But the key problem, according to the instructor, is not in the Air Force itself, but in the lack of systematic planning.
Igor Lutsenko points out that because of this, operators are unable to fully train within the time limits set by the course. As a result, undertrained crews end up at the front, and units are forced to spend resources on their retraining or put up with losses due to mistakes.
According to him, the state budget and funds from allies are producing «more and more new and interesting drones.» Therefore, operators constantly need new training, but it is very difficult to pass it, due to «solid prohibitions.»
Ihor Lutsenko believes that the General Staff should intervene in the situation and:
Reconsider priorities — consider training UAV operators as a key element of defense capability.
Plan training in a new way — choose geographically more convenient areas, coordinate flight schedules, and minimize chaos in permits.
Provide predictability — so that training centers can plan training without downtime.
«Hundreds of people stand at training grounds for weeks. They are paid money, they are fed — but they do not fly. And they could already be working on the front lines,» says the co-founder of the Air Intelligence Support Center.
According to Lutsenko, it is possible to build a better system for training UAV operators without spending additional funds from the state budget.
«Now we have a drone war with Russia, a race to see who can increase the potential of their unmanned forces faster. And we should win this race. This race is our destiny,» the military man believes.
