"Now there is no such thing as being a programmer or a signalman - and that's it. You need to be versatile." A citizen of Kharkiv told how his IT experience helped him become a signalman on the front and teach others to do the same
In February 2022, programmer Vladislav from Kharkiv joined the ranks of one of the famous Kharkiv volunteer units and took up arms for the first time in his life. Now he has the call sign «Tamik», is a senior sergeant in the 115th separate mechanized brigade of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, trains signalmen and has been defending the Donetsk region for the third year. Vladislav believes that «IT people are the laziest people in the world» and that is why they are effective.
During his first battle in February 2022, Vladislav realized that patriotism and fighting spirit were not enough — serious military training was needed, so in the spring he went to study.
«We studied for two months — first basic military training, then training for a specialty. I was sent to study to be a signalman, since I am a programmer by education and work well with computers,» the IT specialist said in an interview with ArmyInform.
Since then, Vladyslav has gained real combat experience, knowledge, and skills that now allow him to prepare for the front line new arrivals to the brigade, who have just completed the BZVP.
He became an instructor in January 2024. According to the IT worker, this was facilitated by the habit he acquired in civilian life of constantly learning, learning something new, and improving his skills and abilities.
«Aytovites are the laziest people in the world. They will always find a million ways to make everything easier, they will never complicate it. To achieve a result, they will develop the simplest algorithm — and they will get what they want,» the military man jokes.
This is what helped Vladyslav not only become one of the best signalers in the brigade, but also effectively help and teach others.
At one point, when I was a squad commander and later a communications platoon sergeant, I was invited to try my hand at the role of an instructor. There are actually not that many intelligent communications officers, and even fewer who can teach others. Therefore, my main task became to train communications officers, — says the instructor.
Working with fellow instructors, the soldier has also improved his knowledge in other areas of military science. So now he can help his comrades by assisting them or replacing them while practicing simpler basic points.
«Now there is no such thing as being a programmer or a signalman — and that’s it. You need to be a generalist, know one thing deeply — and at the same time know the basics of everything else. That’s why now I’m doing both topography and tactics. I may not know the subtleties as deeply as some of my colleagues, but I can always help other instructors,» explains the senior sergeant.

Vladislav believes that now there are enormous opportunities for development and self-improvement. Every instructor is obliged to do this, and every fighter can, with the help of more experienced comrades.
He is confident that it is precisely with high-quality training and preparation of fighters that losses can be reduced, giving soldiers maximum knowledge and skills in order to maximize their chances of survival in battle.
