"These should be special forces, which gather brilliant engineers who are currently fighting in the infantry or assault brigades." The founder of First Contact explained why 70% of Western weapons do not work on the battlefield and what the army should do about it
Special units should be created in the Ukrainian army that, in cooperation with Western weapons manufacturers, would test their products on the battlefield, because currently about 70% of such Western weapons are not effective in frontline conditions and require technical refinement.
Special units should be created in the Ukrainian army that, in cooperation with Western weapons manufacturers, would test their products on the battlefield, because currently about 70% of such Western weapons are not effective in frontline conditions and require technical refinement.
This was stated in a comment to dev.ua during IT Arena 2025 by Valeriy Borovik, head of the New Energy of Ukraine alliance and founder of the drone manufacturer First Contact.
«This issue is not currently resolved, although we tried to do so with the previous Chief of the General Staff and other military leadership. But unfortunately, we did not reach any concrete decisions, because everyone is engaged in extinguishing fires. Everyone is doing what is needed from today to today,» Borovyk noted.
According to Borovyk, they, together with their partners from the German arms manufacturer Diehl Defence, sent letters regarding the creation of such units.
«What should be done to integrate this into concrete daily work? These should be special units that would gather those cool, brilliant engineers who, unfortunately, are now fighting either in the infantry or in assault brigades. They should be pulled out of there and given BRs so that they can work with Western equipment, so that they can return to the laboratory in Ukraine, go to the laboratory in Paris, New York or Germany, and work with Western engineers to quickly integrate and change the solutions that are in the West, and return them to the front in Ukraine,» Valeriy Borovyk explained his opinion.
He is convinced that a separate position should be provided for strategic planning in the leadership of military structures, because this area is «lagging.»
«We have to look ahead. This should be a person who is engaged in innovation and not distracted by everything else. She is a chief visionary officer,» the founder of First Contact stated.
Valeriy Borovyk added that on a friendly basis he manages to ensure such testing of Western weapons on the battlefield, but these are spot solutions, not systematic work in the state.
«We looked here at what technologies they have — we went back and are working on them. But these are specific private things, and we need to do this at the state level,» he summed up.
Answering questions about the export of Ukrainian weapons and the opening of representative offices of Ukrainian miltech enterprises abroad, Borovik also expressed the opinion that these decisions are timely.
«We should not merge our technologies for cheap, but cooperate in a mutually beneficial way. In order not to lose our companies and their production, we need to provide such an opportunity. Moreover, there are Ukrainian technologies that we do not need at the front now. But in Africa, relatively speaking, they can work. If, of course, we look at who to sell to and how to control these supplies,» he emphasized.
