«I expect it to happen next weekend, unless something really bad happens,» Linux founder Linus Torvalds was quoted as saying by The Register.
Torvalds believes that due to artificial intelligence, super-large updates have become the norm, and there is no getting away from this.
«Even by ‘new normal’ standards, this is a big rc release, and I think it’s the biggest rc6 we’ve had in years, at least in terms of commits,» he announced in early August.
The head of Linux kernel development said before the release that he was «not thrilled with the scale of it all.»
«But what we have is what we have: a new normal with a lot of fixes, many of which have been tested by various artificial intelligence tools,» Torvalds added a few more words to his announcement.
While Torvalds is concerned about the size of rc7, he assured that «nothing in itself looks particularly scary — there’s just a lot of it.»
«Most of the updates are pretty small,» he emphasized, naming the three biggest changes: the s390/zcrypt fix, the return of the btrfs fix infrastructure, and some ipset netfilter fixes.
«Apart from a few places like this, most of it is just a bunch of small fixes. They are scattered all over the place — drivers (video card, sound, network, etc.), file systems, core networking, Arch code,» the programmer said.
